一顆尺寸堪比摩天大樓的小行星「2008 OS7」2日經由過程距離地球約170萬英里(約270萬公里)處。美國太空總署(NASA)研究團隊較量爭論,月球與地球的距離為24萬英里,小行星與地球距離為地球到月球距離的七倍,因此毫無撞擊地球風險。

美國太空總署近地天體研究中間(Center for Near-Earth Object Studies,CNEOS )估量小行星直徑落在 690 至 1,575 英尺(210 至 480 公尺)之間。這項數據象徵,小行星的大小幾近同等於102層樓的紐約帝國大廈或108層樓的芝加哥威利斯大廈。

這顆小行星發現於2008年,定名為 2008 OS7。下次接近地球的時刻為2032年,但與地球的距離將耽誤到4500萬英里。

2008 OS7的接近僅僅是本周地球與小行星間數次近距離接觸之一。 2日另有3顆小直徑低於數十公尺的小行星掠過,一樣不會有任何撞擊可能;3日也有兩顆小行星接近地球。 4日則有一顆巨細約為2008 OS7一半的小行星,以4500萬英里的距離擦過地球。
